Nature Note: Pileated Woodpecker

Right around the first of May I saw, well first I heard, a pileated woodpecker hammering away on a huge snag in the Ecola Creek forest, just behind the gate. It flew away as I got closer, but there was no mistaking the giant woodpecker.
